As Maharashtra tries to grapple with the second wave of the coronavirus, Pune showed a big jump on Tuesday, March 23 with 5,741 fresh cases being recorded.

This happens to be the second-highest number of new cases ever being detected in Pune since the outbreak began last year. The highest-ever count remains the 5,939 cases that were reported on September 10 last year.

According to reports, the jump in the number of COVID-19 cases came despite a relative decline in the testing numbers on Tuesday. Compared to 21,616 samples a day earlier, only 19,796 samples were tested. Yet, while 4,345 positive cases were detected on Monday, the Tuesday count jumped to 5,741. Of these, 3,145 cases were reported from the Pune Municipal Corporation areas, while Pimpri Chinchwad contributed 1,488. The remaining 1,108 cases came from cantonment and rural areas.

On the other hand, earlier on Monday, March 22, the COVID-19 tally of Pune rose by 4,345 to touch 4,73,799, it also witnessed 33 deaths and 1,789 people getting discharged. Moreover, the city accounted for 2,342 of the new cases whereas the total cases recorded is 2,37,736. In addition, as of now, about 2.5 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered

Meanwhile, on March 22, the civic body of Pune restarted a jumbo treatment facility set up last year in a college ground in Shivajinagar when the outbreak was at its peak. Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said the facility restarted with 55 beds, and some 500 beds will be activated initially, including 250 oxygenated and 50 ICU ones.
