On Sunday, August 16, Pune surpassed Mumbai as it recorded 3,200 fresh cases of the coronavirus.

The city of Pune now has a little over 1.3 lakh people who have so far been infected with the coronavirus. Mumbai, which has been discovering between 1,000 and 1,200 new cases every day, has about 1.28 lakh people who have been infected with the contagious disease.

Even though Pune has been one of the first cities where cases of COVID-19 were discovered, it always had lesser cases than Mumbai, more so owing to the size and population of the city of Mumbai.

However, the recent surge is being attributed to increased testing across the city. Pune has been conducting the most number of tests for the coronavirus in the state, and almost twice the number in Mumbai. Pune had earlier ordered one lakh antigen tests in the month of July and has ordered another one lakh kits more to conduct effective testing.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Sunday, clocked 11,111 new cases of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, propelling the state's COVID-19 tally to 5,95,865. However, in a grim and unfortunate milestone, 20,000 people have succumbed to the disease after the state reported 288 new fatalities on Sunday.

On the other hand, in Mumbai, 1,010 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 on August 16, taking the aggregate to 1,28,726.
