Navi Mumbai ramps up testing for COVID-19

Navi Mumbai, which has 3,726 active cases at present, has till now witnessed 36,670 RT-PCR tests being conducted since the coronavirus outbreak.

Since July 16, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has conducted 33,453 rapid antigen tests, with over 3,000 people testing positive for the coronavirus.

This comes after the NMMC faced flak for not conducting enough tests. Navi Mumbai, which has 3,726 active cases at present, has till now witnessed 36,670 RT-PCR tests being conducted since the coronavirus outbreak in March.

As per civic officials, the rapid antigen tests, which are used for larger surveys to determine the spread of the coronavirus, were conducted in containment zones, to further devise a strategy.

Earlier, the NMMC had ordered all the malls to remain closed from August 6 in the Navi Mumbai area. According to reports, the malls were permitted to resume operations on the conditions that the safety measures were to be strictly adhered by the operators as well as the visitors. However, since the guidelines were not followed, the NMMC had issued an order to shut them down again.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, August 9, the state recorded 12,248 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus, propelling the state's COVID-19 tally to 5,15,332. Currently, there are 1,45,558 active cases in the state. With 13,348 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 3,51,710.

On the other hand, the COVID-19 positivity rate, recovery rate, and fatality rate in Maharashtra stand at 18.91 per cent, 68.25 per cent, and 3.45 per cent respectively.
