In June, the monsoon season began in Maharashtra and several parts of the state enjoyed light rain showers and breezy winds. However, in July, heavy rainfall and gusty winds took over parts of the state which led to several landslides and other damages. Since then, the amount of rainfall has only intensified across the state.

On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in media reports that several parts of Maharashtra are likely to face heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. The weather forecasting department stated that this is due to a low pressure area formed over north west and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal.

As per the IMD, starting Sunday, the western ghat sections of central Maharashtra and the coastal regions of the state are likely to experience heavy rainfall activities. While intense rain spells are expected over the Vidarbha region on Monday, the central parts of Maharashtra are likely to receive thunderstorms and lightning.

The weather forecasting agency has also further stated that the western coast including the areas of Mumbai city and its suburbs are likely to witness strong winds with speed reaching up to 50 to 60 km per hour. After light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas in the last two days, rain activities are likely to become active again in the city.

In the last two days, the Observatories of Colaba and Santacruz recorded 20 mm to 45 mm of rainfall respectively in Mumbai and its suburbs. In the first week of August itself, Mumbai rains have caused multiple tree falls, flooding, vehicle damages, property collapses and landslides.
