Maharashtra, in the first 11 days of July, reported 88,130 covid cases. This number is now invoking fear amongst people as a signal of a possible third wave. Experts are also of the opinion that the upward trend in cases could signal another wave heading towards Maharashtra since similar trends were witnessed in the earlier waves.

On the other hand, between July 1 and 11, Delhi reported 870 cases when it had earlier reported 25,000 cases in the second wave. Kerala, on the other hand, has reported 1,28,951 cases from July 1 to July 10. Therefore, the number of cases in Maharashtra, pose a sign of worry.

In the Kolhapur district in Maharashtra, 3,000 cases were reported in the last fortnight. Member of the task force, Dr Shashank Joshi has stated that the happenings in Kolhapur are unique since even though it has the highest vaccination percentage, it also has the highest positivity rate. He added that various nuances such as those of the Delta strain, inappropriate social covid behaviour, and the slow speed of the vaccination drive are posing a problem. Additionally, since humans find it arduous to stay at home either out of compulsion or fatigue, the virus has an opportunity to enter, if double masking and appropriate behaviour is not adhered to.

During both the peaks, Maharashtra was the first state to report either the first cases or clusters and the current rise in cases potentially signals an upward trend in the covid graph.

Experts also warn against the rise in cases in July and that various districts in Maharashtra saw their peaks at different times. Thus, they say that it can be interpreted that the virus is still amongst us.
