The number of cases have started to come down but there is a fear of the third wave looming. As per experts, the third wave will have the maximum impact on the children. Hence the results of the latest Sero survey will come in as a big relief.

This serosurvey conducted in the city between April 1 and June 15. This survey has revealed that 51.18% of children between the age group of 1 to 18 years have developed antibodies against the coronavirus.

The survey was conducted by Nair Hospital and Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai. These hospitals collected samples from 2,176 children and they were medically examined for other illnesses in public and private laboratories.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said, "There is a notable increase in the sero positivity in the paediatric population to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) in this study as compared to the third sero survey conducted in March 2021".

As per estimates, there are about 1.5 million children that are under the age of 18. Currently, there are no vaccines approved for this age group. However, it is estimated that Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 might be given emergency approval in India soon. It is also expected that Zydus Cadila's vaccine for kids in the age of 12-18 years may get approval by July to August 2021.

According to this survey, the highest sero prevalence was found in children between the ages of 10 and 14 at 53.43 per cent. Children aged 15-18 showed 51.39 per cent sero prevalence and those between one and four showed 51.04 per cent sero prevalence. The sero positivity between the age of 15-18 age group stood at 51.39 per cent.
