The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken the redevelopment of suburban hospitals to provide up-to-date and sophisticated healthcare facilities to Mumbaikars. The work of redevelopment of Pandit Madanmohan Malviya (Shatabdi) Hospital in Govandi has reached its final stage. The construction work of the hospital is expected to be completed by June 2024 and the Shatabdi Hospital with all facilities will be ready for patient care by October.


Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi is considered as an important hospital for the treatment of citizens of Chembur, Govandi, Baiganwadi Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar area. Due to the lack of up-to-date and modern facilities in this hospital, these citizens are forced to go to KEM, Sion, Nair, Rajawadi and JJ hospital. Considering the lack of up-to-date health facilities in all the suburban hospitals in mumbai, the BMC has decided to redevelop the hospitals.

Accordingly, the redevelopment project of Rajawadi, Kandivali Shatabdi, Bhagwati, Govandi Shatabdi and other hospitals has been undertaken. Along with the latest medical services and facilities, the number of beds will also be increased. This hospital has 210 beds. However, during the redevelopment, the BMC has decided to start an intensive care hospital with 862 beds. As much as INR 356 crore will be spent for the redevelopment of the hospital.


Medical equipment will be installed after the hospital is completed in June 2024. The health department of the civic body informed that the hospital will be equipped with modern laboratory, X-ray, sonography etc. equipment and expert doctors along with a modular surgery room.


In 2007, the BMC decided to redevelop Govandi Shatabdi Hospital as well, however the actual work started in 2019. The hospital was expected to open in December 2022. The officials of the health department informed that the work is being completed after almost two years and the hospital will be ready for patient care in October 2024.
