The State Government is casting a bright light on organ donation. Like last year, this year as well, the state has decided to carry out an awareness campaign regarding the same. This awareness campaign will begin on August 29 and will conclude on August 30. During this campaign, people will form a human chain and will speak about the importance of organ donation. Before the campaign, the number was 41 and after the campaign kick-started in 2016 the number went up to 131. Considering the number, Maharashtra comes second when it comes to organ donation and Tamil Nadu is in the first place.

The Wait List Continues
Around 12,000 patients are waiting for a kidney transplant while 3,600 are waiting for liver transplant.

One brain-dead person can save eight lives and so organ donation is the need of the hour. We have started this campaign to reach out to those who are in need of an organ transplant. Hospitals too should keep themselves ready for emergency situations,” Girish Mahajan, Medical Education Minister.

State Planning To Amend The Rules
Organ donation sees a roadblock due to its stringent rules and regulations. In India, doctors have to take permission of the patient’s relatives prior to organ donation. But, this is not the same outside India. The person staying abroad fills up the organ donation form along with the driving license form. The state is now planning to follow the same. But, as Motor Vehicle Act comes under Central Government directive, it will take time to make the amendments.

Organ Donation And Superstition
Apart from this, there is a weird belief that if one donates eyes, then that particular person will be born blind in his next birth. Due to this, people keep themselves at bay.

Lack Of Facilities In Rural Areas
In rural areas, there are no doctors who can carry out proper organ donation surgeries. Hence, many people don't go for it, even if they are interested.
