State to adopt Community media support for addressing mental health issues

Due to the changing lifestyle and post-coronavirus situation, a large number of mental health problems have arisen among the citizens. The health department has now decided to use social media to create awareness among citizens about these issues, as well as guide psychiatrists. The health department has created a WhatsApp group to convey the mental health treatment methods in the state to the doctors at the primary level.


Over the past few years, citizens have started facing the problems of increasing workload, mental stress, depression, anxiety on a large scale. Due to these problems, a person who has become a mental patient does not communicate with anyone about this. Telemanus helpline was started so that citizens can raise their problems and get timely treatment for their mental illness. So far, this helpline has benefited more than 20 thousand citizens of the state. A third of these citizens reported experiencing anxiety, depression and frequent suicidal thoughts. But the life of these citizens has become easier due to the counseling provided through the helpline.

Mental illness is of two types, mild and severe. In the mild type, there are problems like anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, frequent thoughts of suicide. In this case, the serious illness can be avoided if the concerned person gets proper treatment in time. 

Hence, the health department has decided to use social media to provide information to doctors on how to treat various types of mental patients, what schemes have been launched by the government for their treatment, what medicines to give to patients, how to do yoga, meditation, counseling, and also what care should be taken during treatment. For this, a separate WhatsApp group of doctors, counselors, social workers, trained nurses who treat mental patients has been created, according to the information given by the Director of Health Department, Swapnil Lale.
