Almost all of us know that police help can be sought by dialing 100. But, when there is a medical emergency or a fire accident, many of us get confused and start searching for helpline numbers.

112 Crisis Helpline

The crux of the matter is that a comprehensive helpline number already exists, but many are not aware of it. Under the 'One Country, One Emergency Number' initiative, the Centre had launched a 112 helpline for those in distress. This round the clock service is available across India and the most remarkable feature is that whichever state you are in, the number will connect you with the local police of your current location.

By dialing 112, one gets access to emergency services like police, fire brigade and ambulance. This number is beneficial if women feel insecure or if a child is in a difficult situation.

Specifically for Maharashtra, two centers have been set up at Nagpur and Navi Mumbai to monitor calls to 112. After the call is received, it is forwarded to the local police and a patrol van near the scene is immediately dispatched to assist. According to the police, the main control room receives 2,000 calls every day.

At times, senior citizens contact the police through 112 when they need medication or panic. In such cases, medicines are sent to the homes of senior citizens by a constable. If a woman in distress dials 112, the police van nearest to the victim is called for immediate assistance.

The control room has received around 30 threat calls since January. A police officer said that in February, a 112 caller had threatened to blow up the houses of Amitabh Bachchan, Mukesh Ambani and Dharmendra
