Mumbai needs another 9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccination to vaccinate the estimated adult population of the city entirely. The civic officials have reportedly said that they will achieve this target by the year-end, provided they receive at least 3 million doses each month.

As per civic estimates, the city's adult population is around 9.07 million or 9,078,952, to be precise. They have drawn these estimates from the 2011 census and projected mid-year population growth.

According to the reports, as of Monday, September 20, the city had delivered around 11.2 million doses. However, it still leaves the gap of 7 million more doses to cover the estimated adult population fully. The civic body is counting an additional 2 million doses since many people who have taken COVID-19 vaccination in Mumbai aren't from the city.

While addressing the media, the city's immunization officer, Dr Sheetal Jagtap, said that they are taking regular updates from the vaccination centres in the city so they can get an estimate of doses administered to the people living outside the city. After considering all the factors, she said Mumbai requires "another 9 million doses to cover its own population."

Additional Commissioner, Suresh Kakani, said to the media that the vaccination quota of the city has increased this month. If they get a higher number of doses, they will cover all the adult population by year-end. He added that few people would need buffer time since the Covishield vaccine has an 84-day gap between two doses.

During the month's start, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged the hospitals and corporates to donate vaccines for the poorer population.

As per reports, Mumbai became the first district in Maharashtra to complete administering 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines earlier this month.
