While the prevalence of COVID-19 is slowly showing signs of decline in Mumbai, its neighbouring areas have now become the major hotspots for the deadly virus. Since the state-wide lockdown restrictions were relaxed in June, the areas under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have witnessed a massive surge in coronavirus cases.

According to the data provided by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Navi Mumbai have reached 13,618 and the death toll has gone up to 338. So far, there are 4,440 active cases in the region and 8,830 patients have recovered from the infection.

To curb the  spread of the virus, the NNMC had imposed a complete lockdown in the 12 containment zones from June 29 to July 6, followed by a complete lockdown in the entire city from July 3 to 13. The lockdown was later extended till July 19 by the civic body. Currently, the city has placed its 42 hotspots under a complete lockdown till July 31. Despite these efforts by the authorities, the daily rise in positive cases have crossed the 300 mark and the mortality rate remains 3 per cent in the city.

As per media reports, the NMMC has stated that this sudden surge in positive cases is a result of rapid testing along with antigen tests conducted in the the city. On an average, the civic body conducts 1,000 antigen tests every. So far, the civic body has conducted 6,000 antigen tests, out of which 900 have been tested positive for the infection.
