While Covid-19 cases in Mumbai are showing signs of slowing down, the city's neighbouring areas have now started to crumble due to the spread of the virus. On Thursday, Ulhasnagar recorded 202 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the total tally of the region to 5,046. The death toll in the city has reached 74.

The data provided by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation's health department states that so far, 2,973 coronavirus patients have been discharged and there are 1,999 active cases in the region. It has also been reported that due to lack of proper medical treatments and facilities in the city, most of the asymptomatic coronavirus patients have preferred to isolate themselves at home. The data suggests that out of 1,114 asymptomatic patients, 635 are isolating at home while just 479 patients have been admitted in Covid-19 centres.

Ulhasnagar is currently the fifth worst-hit city in the Thane district of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The neighbouring areas of Kalyan-Dombivali have also become one of the biggest coronavirus hotspots in the state, with more than 14,000 cases. Meanwhile, areas of Ambernath have recorded more than 2,800 cases and Badlapur has witnessed more than 1,600 cases so far.

As per media reports, due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the city, the commissioner of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation has decided to implement the Dharavi pattern. Ulhasnagar is set to see door-to-door surveys with the help of corporators and volunteering teams to curb the virus by tracing the suspects in the region.

The slum area of Dharavi which was once a major hub for the spread of the deadly virus in Mumbai city has now seen massive improvements in the reduction of positive cases. The densely populated slum’s success in breaking the coronavirus chain even earned some praise by the World Health Organization (WHO) at a recent briefing.
