The vaccination drive is being carried out in the country at a breaking neck speed. Mumbai is no different in this regard. However, there are a few speed bumps that the city has to face from time to time due to the unavailability of vaccines. It now seems that the vaccination drive in Mumbai will pick pace from Monday, August 16.
Mumbai on Saturday has received 1.15 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine. This is expected to ease out supply issues in the short run and also help in speeding up the ongoing drive.
Incidentally, on Saturday, August 14, there was a good turnout of Mumbaikars and more than 2 lakh people got their jabs. Commenting on this feat, of 2 lakh vaccinations on Saturday, Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said this could be made possible as the centres were instructed to vaccinate as many as possible. Even the state hit the record vaccination record on Saturday with more than 9 lakh people getting their shot on Saturday. However, this number came down to less than 2 lakh got jabs on Sunday.
Coming back to Mumbai, from Monday, BMC intends to hold walk-in drives at the community level centres on Monday. Private centres on Sunday vaccinated nearly 21,000 people.
In India, there are three vaccines are being administered, Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V. While Moderna and Johnson and Johnson's single-dose COVID-19 vaccine have got emergency use approval, there is no timeline for the availability of these vaccines.
It was announced last week that India is expecting to procure 266 million COVID-19 vaccine doses in August as a simpler licensing process has helped the government secure far more than earlier expected. The earlier estimate was 150 million. Besides, Indian drugmaker Cadila Healthcare's ZyCoV-D could get a stamp of approval soon. This could be the first vaccine that could be administered to children in the 12-18 age group. Ahead of the third wave, India is trying to vaccinate as many people as possible.
