Out of the two railway oxygen plants for emergency COVID-19 patients, one of them is now operational at the rail hospital in Mumbai Central. This oxygen plant belongs to Western Railways (WR). The Mumbai Central oxygen plant was started last week.

It is also the seventh Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plant, which is commissioned by Western Railways. WR's Chief Public Relations Officer Sumit Thakur said that the two oxygen plants would supply oxygen to patients of Jagjivan Ram Hospital at Mumbai Central. The plants will be producing oxygen with 93% purity. They will also be serving as a secure and constant source of oxygen produced directly at the hospital.

He further said that one would serve as a backup to the other to prevent any disaster during an emergency breakdown out of the two plants.

The earlier plants of WR's were at Divisional Railway Hospitals at Sabarmati, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, and Ratlam. Oxygen plants on Central Railways are also planned. They are said to be commissioned at Dr. BR Ambedkar hospital at Byculla which is still under construction. The other one is planned at a railway hospital at Kalyan.
