With the removal of lockdowns and resumption of travel, Indian medical tourism seeks progress in critical cases of weight loss surgeries. A majority of people come from Asian and African countries for further treatment and management of obesity in the country. However, not everybody can qualify for the surgery; one must have a body mass index (BMI) of over 32 if they do not have a chronic disease. If one is diabetic, hypertensive, or has infertility issues, knee injuries, and is overweight, their BMI must be above 30 for them to qualify for the weight loss surgery.

Dr Manish Motwani, Chief Bariatric Surgeon – Aastha Bariatrics -Centre of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Mumbai said, “Obesity is becoming a health concern, globally, necessitating a surgical intervention to avert life-risks. Weight-loss surgery is important for people who are at a greater risk of health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke due to obesity. India is one of the most popular and the best destination for weight loss surgery in the world due to the state-of-the-art facilities, and high level of expertise offered to conduct all types of surgical procedures for shedding those excess kilos. India is known for offering some of the best medical treatments in the world. Obesity surgeries remain one of the top procedures for which international patients travel to the country. Therefore, there is an inflow of patients for obesity surgeries. Just like other international patients, this Kenyan patient too approached us for weight-loss surgery.”

Patient Felisters Muchera weight was 160 kgs with mild asthma, inability to walk and severe ankle pain that couldn’t bear the body weight. She consulted various doctors from Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Sudan, but the cost of bariatric surgery is too expensive in comparison to India. Hence, she traveled from Kenya to Mumbai with the hope to get relief from the obesity-related problems.

“She underwent successful Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure and was discharged on 3rd day after surgery. Post-surgery, she lost 39 kg in a span of 4 months. She is set to lose more weight in the upcoming months and is working hard to reach the ideal body weight. The patient is advised to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise daily,” said Dr Motwani.

The patient Felisters Muchera said ,“I suffered a lot due to obesity and the comorbidities associated with it. I was anxious, stressed, frustrated, irritated and restless as I was rapidly gaining weight.  I tried many things like diet, exercise, and even medication before opting for the surgery, but I failed. I even avoided stepping out of the house at one point in time. I searched online regarding medical tourism in India and found out about Dr Manish Motwani who offers the best treatment at Astha Healthcare in Mumbai. This advanced Center of Excellence provides good clinical outcomes, state-of-the-art technology, medical expertise, and huge success rates. Before surgery, I could not walk and would get tired very quickly. But, now I do most of my work by myself and feel lively. My recovery was uneventful without any pain. I am active and still in the process of losing weight. I thank Dr Motwani for his prompt treatment and care. I started enjoying walking now which was previously a herculean task for me.  Now, I eat well, exercise daily, and sleep peacefully without worrying.  I never had confidence and now I see how far I have come.”
