A 43-year-old man was killed while another one was injured after an elevator from the 40th floor of a residential building was crashed during maintenance work in Mumbai's Grant Road area.

The mishap took place in the Siddhajyoti building on Balaram Street, a redevelopment project, around 4:30 pm. The deceased has been identified as Suryakant Rajiv Pujari while the injured person, Anubhav Tripathi (26), is undergoing treatment in HN Reliance Hospital.

Pujari, who was an Andheri resident, is survived by his wife and family.

The injured has sustained injuries to his head and leg and is in critical condition, said a doctor.

The tragedy occurred after the lift’s belt suddenly broke at a time when the two were engaged in maintenance work on the elevator when the crash took place.

An accidental death case was registered at the D B Marg police station.

According to reports, there were four workers engaged in the maintenance work. While Pujari and Tripathi were on top of the lift, the other two were outside it.

Officials said lift crash incidents were on the rise as they were not being maintained, usually by third-party agencies.

Therefore, Maharashtra Lift, Escalators and Moving Walkways Act, 2017, was introduced to replace the existing Maharashtra Lift Act, 1939, under which the functioning of lifts in the state was regulated.

Earlier, in a similar incident, in December 2021, five persons were injured after a lift collapsed in an SRA building in Andheri (East).
