Mumbai's iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) located in the Southern part of the city will soon be redeveloped. As per reports, the redevelopment project of the CSMT building and premises will be carried out by a private developer and a request for proposal was invited from companies interested in the same.

CSMT is identified as a historic heritage site post the redevelopment, the structure would have a different look and feel. 

The response to the proposal is being considered by the officials. A total of 10 leading companies have shown interest in redevelopment, and the names include GMR Enterprises Pvt Ltd, Kalpataru Power Transmission, Adani Railway Transport, Godrej Property, Oberoi Realty and others, of which one of the companies will be selected soon.

CSMT is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is also the headquarters of the Central Railway. The main objectives of the redevelopment project are to separate the arrival and departure sections, to make the station friendly for the differently-abled, to provide better facilities to the passengers, to adopt energy-saving options, to renovate and renovate the station to make it look like the 1930s.

Furthermore, there will be an attempt to set up a 'Rail Mall' in the CSMT area, which as proposed will have entertainment and shopping facilities.

Currently, the redevelopment project is expected to cost INR 1,642 crore. The company with which the agreement will be signed will be given a lease for 60 years for the maintenance and other (commercial) affairs of this railway station.
