The Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai has identified 44 flyovers and subways on the Western Express Highway (WEH) that require immediate maintenance. The estimated budget for these repairs is INR 200 crore.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) transferred the maintenance responsibilities of all WEH infrastructure to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in November 2022. The BMC accepted these responsibilities without any changes.

VJTI began work on a structural audit report in April 2023. They enlisted Structonoics Consulting Engineering to provide repair recommendations.

According to reports, the repair methodologies have also been suggested for the Andheri flyover, and the tender process is ongoing. Work is also underway on the Parsi Panchayet subway.

The repairs will be funded by municipal funds, as non-municipal assets are not included in the budget. An account ledger will also be maintained for government and MMRDA reimbursement.

The WEH has nearly 60 flyovers, culverts, and FOBs in all. The BMC also made the decision to clear some significant intersections on the western highway. It includes the Milan subway junction in Vile Parle, Dahisar, and Andheri, as well as Hanuman Road and the Sudhir Phadke flyover.

Last month, it was reported that BMC would conduct an audit of culverts, foot over bridges, and flyovers on the western and eastern express highways. The cost of the audit was estimated to be INR 90 lakh.
