The Maharashtra government is looking to construct 60-70 field hospitals throughout the districts to offer services to COVID-19 patients throughout the year, stated a report by the Times of India. This comes amidst claims by many that the virus is reaching its endemic stage.

The proposed facilities are anticipated to be equipped with 50 to 100 beds which are part of the larger proposal to curate a supplementary infrastructure to ensure that impending coronavirus waves don’t hinder the operations on non-COVID-19 medical establishments.

The field hospitals are expected to be built in tier-II and tier-III cities that usually get swamped when cases increase. A senior state official elaborated that the above is what they are gearing up for which basically means to live with COVID-19, highlighted the account.

With a longevity of 20 years, these field hospitals will not be temporary and COVID-19 patients will be first sent to the field hospitals. It is only when the number of patients there crosses the 100-mark will the patients be diverted to the regular hospitals, the reported quoted the official.

These medical establishments will be constructed by means of the finances in the Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package: phase II (ECRP-II) which is partially funded by the Union. Approximately 35 hospitals will have 50 beds and other 30-35 hospitals will have 100 beds. The state government is also looking to enhance the medical oxygen supply capacity by 2,000 kilolitres and include 3,000 ICU beds.

Through the ECRP-I, the state government has attained Rs 1,185cr in the first wave, in the ECRP-II it suggested Rs 1,380cr, some of which will be used to make the hospitals. In India, it is expected that with the ECRP money, 203 field hospitals can be made by March 2022.

At present, Maharashtra has nearly 37,000 active cases that are prominently in seven to eight districts, mentioned the narrative. An official elucidated that, in the other districts, big COVID-19 facilities are operational with minimum patients. Adding that these field hospitals will help save manpower and other resources. With a fall in numbers, the state government has ended the services of an estimated 18,000 people that were recruited on a temporary basis for COVID-19 assistance, claimed the account.
