The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has revealed a detailed plan to build a network of ring roads around Mumbai over the next five years. The goal is to ease traffic congestion and cut down travel times across the city. MMRDA has approved a proposal of INR 58,000 crore to construct nearly 90 km of roads, bridges, and tunnels.

The plan will increase connectivity to suburban areas, the Gujarat border in the north, Konkan in the south, and Western Maharashtra. For this, seven inner and outer ring roads will form the core of the project. These roads are currently in different stages of planning and tendering.

The seven ring roads under the plan are:

When complete, these roads will create a full ring around Mumbai. This will reduce congestion on other road and train networks. Many of these highways will include tolls. The project is in line with the goal of bringing travel times across the city down to under an hour. The ring roads will provide alternative routes for freight and passenger traffic.

The total investment required for the construction might reach INR 3 lakh crore. As per reports, funding support is also coming from international organisations like the Japan International Cooperation Agency. MMRDA will work with several agencies like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

The construction of around 90 km of new highways is already underway, much of it financed by external sources. The plan focuses on improving east-west connectivity, which has often been neglected in favour of the north-south routes.

Mumbai’s traffic issues are expected to rise in the coming years with major developments like Wadhwan Port and Navi Mumbai International Airport. These new highways are designed to handle the expected increase in traffic.
