The Western Railway (WR) has announced the foundation stone laying of eight stations on the Mumbai suburban line by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the redevelopment and modernisation.

The foundation will be laid on February 26, 2024, of 66 stations, spanning across six divisions of WR. Meanwhile, Under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme 12 railway stations of the Central Railway (CR)’s Mumbai division are also set for the massive transformation and redevelopment

Of the total, 46 stations are spread across the state of Gujarat, while 11 are in Maharashtra and 9 in Madhya Pradesh. It will be revamped at the cost of INR 4,886 crores.

Of the 11 stations in Maharashtra, eight are a part of Mumbai division.

These eight suburban stations include Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Jogeshwari, Malad and Palghar. It will be undertaken at a cost of INR 233 crore.

Additionally, provision of a 12m wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) has also been planned at Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Jogeshwari and Malad stations.

The cost of this work is INR 85.23 crore, which is included in the total cost of the above stations. These FOBs will serve as Roof Plaza with facilities such as suitable seating for passengers, retail kiosks, etc.

Here’s a look at the project cost and work for each station as per reports by Mid-day:

Cost of Project:

  • Marine Lines: 28 crore
  • Charni Road: 23 crore
  • Grant Road: 28 crore
  • Lower Parel: 30 crore
  • Prabhadevi: 21 crore
  • Jogeshwari: 50 crore
  • Malad: 35 crore
  • Palghar: 18 crore

Redevelopment Work At All Station includes:

1) Improvement of Facade, Service building, Entry / Exit gates

2) Improvement to approach road

3) Beautification of circulating area.

4) Improvement of boundaries/fencing including green patch

5) Improvement of PF surfacing

6) Improved Toilet Blocks & Drainage system

7) Improvement of Road & circulating area.

8) Structural repair & roof sheeting repair

9) Improvement in passenger amenities i.e. proper Booking Offices, Signages, potable Drinking water facilities, seating arrangements, etc.

10) Enhanced illumination

11) Upgradation of Divyangjan facilities

12) Adequate Parking Area

Additional Works:

At Grant Road station, restoration of the Heritage Block of the station entry at the East side will also be undertaken which includes stone cleaning, pointing, line plastering, dutchman repair and monier tile roof.

Malad stone to be used at relevant locations. Non-ticketing area to be explored for additional facilities.
