The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved nine major infrastructure projects during its 282nd Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 4. The total cost of these projects is INR 12,546 crore. This comes on the backdrop of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.
The nine projects are:
1. The key project is the construction of a 13.5 km long Thane Coastal Road. The road will connect Balkum to Gaimukh NH 3 Connector Ghodbunder By-Pass DP Road. The estimated cost for this project is INR 2,727 crore.
2. There is also a 3.93 km road planned to connect Kasarvadavali in Thane to Kharbao in Bhiwandi. This road will cost INR 1,525.3 crore.
3. The MMRDA has also approved the construction of an elevated route from NH-4 (Old) to Katai Naka, costing INR 1,981.2 crore.
4. There will be a 12.95 km extension of the elevated Eastern Freeway from Chheda Nagar Ghatkopar to Thane. The cost of this extension is INR 2,727 crore.
5. The plan also includes an elevated road from Kalyan-Murbad Road to the Badlapur Road overbridge over the Karjat-Kasara railway line. This 2.16 km road will cost INR 451.1 crore.
6. A creek bridge from Kolshet to Kalher will be built at the cost of INR 288.2 crore.
7. A second creek bridge will connect Gaimukh to Payegaon. This bridge will be 6.51 km long and will cost INR 975.6 crore.
8. There will be another elevated road from Anand Nagar to Saket on the Eastern Express Highway.
9. A 608-meter-long foot overbridge will be constructed at Teen Hath Naka in Thane. This project is part of the Metro Line 4 and 4A development. The cost for this foot overbridge (FOB) is INR 68.1 crore.
Chief Secretary Sujata Sainik approved these projects during the meeting. Contractors for all nine projects were also finalised. Out of these nine projects, seven focus on improving road connectivity in Thane, the home district of the chief minister. These seven projects would cost INR 10,114 crore.
The MMRDA noted that these projects would address the region's urgent transit demands. More than 50 km of roads will be built and widened as part of these efforts. The authority added that these projects will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity.
The Thane Coastal Road, spanning 13.5 km, will start at the Kharegaon toll naka on the Mumbai-Nashik route. It will end at Ghodbunder, near Gaimukh, on State Route 42. MMRDA stated that the road will support the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor. The new route will shorten travel time between Kharegaon and Kopri, reducing it from 30 minutes to just 15-20 minutes.
