Mumbai Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday, February 9, launched a Suvidha Kendra in Dharavi, with 111 toilet seats making it the biggest community toilet block in India.

“I thank HUL and HSBC for partnering up with the BMC for this center, which is India’s largest!” expressed Thackeray on Twitter.

According to reports, this center will benefit over 50,000 residents with bathing facilities, RO drinking water, laundry service, etc. In addition, citizens will also be given education on sanitation at the centre.

After the launch, Thackeray said: “Keeping sustainability at its core, the centre will help in saving 6.5 million litres of fresh water every year.”

“We are committed to improving the living standards of the residents by providing them easy access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation,” Thackeray further stated.

It is being designed with safety in mind with separate entrances for women and girls. Specific toilets will open at night to help reduce the risk of violence, which is prevalent at many slum toilets.

Furthermore, there is an inbuilt greywater treatment plant and the facility also uses solar panels for energy generation.

This centres will provide nearly 2 lakh women, children, men and people with disabilities access to water, hygiene and sanitisation services, said the civic body.

Moreover, Thackeray announced the launch of similar Suvidha Kendras at 10 more locations in Ghatkopar, Dharavi, Chembur, Bandra, Santacruz and Govandi.
