Black protest against Metro project

SHARES

Girgaum- Though the state government has given its nod to the Metro 3 project, Girgaum residents are opposing it tooth and nail. And they have done it in a unique style. Locals blackened the barricades which are put up near the construction site. “Shiv Sena is not opposing the project but we are opposing the adverse effects residents will have to face due to the project. This is why irate residents sprayed black ink and conveyed their protest. This is just the beginning. If the work persists, the residents will get on to the streets. We are not doing it because civic elections are nearing. Our protest was registered as far back as 2014. It is the BJP which started this work as elections are nearing”, said Pandurang Sakpal, Shiv Sena ward president. Meanwhile, the residents too have justified their move. “We did not know about the project. There was a meeting with us in 2014 but nothing after that. We were promised that we will be given alternative plots within 500 metres of the project, as a part of the rehabilitation package. But we were not taken into confidence. MMRDA just asked us to vacate the plots. This is not right,” said local resident Shuhda Vichare.
