The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set aside INR 100 crore this year. This allocation represents a significant 25% surge compared to the INR 80 crore spent on the same project last year.

Last week, BMC awarded a contract worth INR 36 crore to deal with potholes. Civic officials have decided to utilise mastic asphalt for this task.

In addition to the INR 36 crore contract, the BMC has allotted INR 48 crore (INR 2 crore each for 24 wards) for pothole repairs. Earlier, two separate tenders were issued for implementing cutting-edge methods like reactive asphalt and rapid-hardening concrete, worth INR 40 crore and INR 81 crore, respectively.

However, these innovative solutions failed to produce the desired results. Hence, the civic body abandoned them midway and issued fresh requests for proposals to address the pothole problem.

According to sources, the funds initially allocated for Reactive Asphalt were significantly reduced from INR 40 crore to INR 9 crore, while those for Rapid-Hardening Concrete saw a decrease from INR 81 crore to INR 40 crore.

The majority of the allocated funds for these novel approaches remained unused, with only a sum of about INR 60 lakh spent so far, as reported by the Indian Express.

This year, they issued a second tender worth INR 125 crore too. But that was specifically for pre-monsoon road surfacing work only.
