The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that Mumbai has 264 potholes in total.

The revelation was made by the civic body’s pothole reporting system, which goes on to say that 150 potholes have been fixed. However, some sources quoted by mid-day said that the actual number of potholes are underreported.

Citizens said that although BMC’s Twitter account receives numerous complaints about bad roads and potholes, the civic tracking system doesn’t register such complaints.

“We are reporting the potholes on the system. Whenever there is heavy and continuous rainfall, the numbers might shoot up but as there is a dry spell now, potholes are being immediately repaired either by ward staff or by road department officials,” a civic official said under anonymity.

Some sources have indicated that COVID-19 vaccination and mitigation measures have hindered the civic body’s infrastructure works, including road repairs. As for the underreporting of bad roads, some sources said that this is due to the fact that pictures of potholes aren’t uploaded to the system.
