One of the longest micro-tunnelling works under the railway tracks for a length of 415 meters at Sandhurst Road railway station was completed successfully in all respects for preventing waterlogging at Sandhurst Road station.

Moreover, a 1,800-mm diameter rainwater RCC pipe was laid under the tracks by the Railway. In addition, a 25-meter long box drain was laid by the corporation in the next part of the railway boundary to connect the rainwater canal to the main rainwater canal of the BMC.

The work involved the construction of 7 pits for facilitating micro tunnelling work. The work had started on March 20 and continued without disturbing the railway operations. Execution of work was carried out by the Engineering branch of Mumbai Division in coordination with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and completed successfully in 4 months time despite the challenges like:

Passing of micro tunnelling alignment below sheds, eight RCC pit lines, 1.5-meter dia RCC pipe of MCGM stormwater drain, rail pieces in front of micro tunnelling machine in yard area, frequent changing of strata like loose marshy soil, weathered rock to hard rock, etc.

General Manager Central Railway Alok Kansal has given a cash award of INR 25,000 to Mumbai Division for successful completion of this work.
