The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken the decision to appoint consultants to scrutinize designs for the 200 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant in the western suburbs, reported Hindustan Times. It is hoped that the construction will begin next year with the functionality of the plant being looked at in the upcoming four years. The BMC expects the cost of construction to be INR 18,000 cr, claimed the account.
The civic authority in October 2020, had decided to bring back the proposal of curating a desalination plant in Mumbai owing to changing rainfall patterns that highlighted the need for an alternative potable water source.
Back then, Aaditya Thackeray, the Environment minister accorded the green signal to the project whilst telling the civic authority to curate a feasibility report by reviving the 2007 plan that looked to offer alternative water due to poor rainfall in the catchment areas.
In 2016-17, the civic authority initiated the process to set up a desalination plant in south Mumbai and either in the suburbs or anywhere in the MMR. But owing to high costs the project was put on hold due and brought back in October 2020.
