To reduce the suffering of Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct underpasses and flyovers at 9 junctions of Eastern and Western Expressways. A tender will be floated for this in January 2024.

A survey is being carried out by the consultant to improve traffic facilities on both the Eastern and Western Expressways in Mumbai. Eastern Expressway is an important 23.55 km long route through eastern suburbs beyond Sion, connecting Navi Mumbai and Thane via Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund.

Underpasses will be constructed at BKC Connector Extension, Chheda Nagar Junction (Ghatkopar), Ghatkopar Junction, JVLR Powai Junction, Kanjurmarg and Airoli Junction on Eastern Expressway. Here people have to risk their lives to cross the junction between the vehicles. Due to this, the speed of vehicles also slows down.

The Western Expressway connecting Mumbai with the western suburbs takes people to Delhi via Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar, Gujarat. The expressway is about 24 km long starting from Mahim and connecting Bandra, Vileparle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Borivali and Dahisar.

There are several flyovers on this expressway to overcome traffic jams, yet during rush hour (morning and evening) people have to be stuck in traffic for hours. Underpasses are going to be constructed at 3 junctions to remove the problems while crossing the Western Expressway.
