The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the list of dilapidated buildings in Mumbai and this number has now gone up to 216. Of these, 114 buildings lie in the western suburbs, 36 buildings lie in the city area and 66 buildings in the eastern suburbs.

The number of dangerous and dilapidated buildings in Mumbai was much higher a few years ago. Due to this, the incidence of building collapse during monsoon is also higher. To combat this, the BMC started a procedure for demolishing dangerous buildings and is succeeding in it as well. Currently there are only 216 private hazardous buildings in Mumbai, as per the report by Loksatta.

On behalf of the BMC, every year before the monsoon season, houses and non-residential places in Mumbai are inspected and their dangerous and extra-hazardous categories are determined. All private and municipal owned buildings in the city, suburbs are surveyed. The buildings which need to be demolished immediately are classified as 'C-One' i.e. extremely dangerous.

Structural inspection of 30 year old buildings

Structural inspection of buildings older than 30 years is done as per municipal policy. 354 notice is issued to vacate the buildings which are found to be dangerous. Accordingly, this year too, the civic body has conducted a survey of dangerous buildings. After the building is declared dangerous, the residents approach the court with objections or if they do not find the building dangerous, they go to the Technical Advisory Committee of the BMC. So those buildings remain in the same condition. If the court orders a stay in respect of a building, that building cannot be demolished.
