The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct retaining walls on both sides of the pedestrian underpass near the Haji Ali Dargah. This underpass is a part of the Coastal Road project. It is the only access point for devotees visiting the shrine.
The walls will prevent seawater from entering the underpass during high tides and heavy rains. This will make sure of safe access to the Dargah, even during the monsoon season.
The decision comes after an incident in April 2024 when a high tide caused the underpass to flood. The flooding forced the shrine to close for three hours. This showed the need for measures for this situation.
As per a report by FPJ, officials have sought Larson and Toubro (L&T) to design the retaining walls and estimate the project’s cost. The plan is still in its early stages, but authorities aim to complete the project before the upcoming monsoon.
The Coastal Road project includes about 20 pedestrian underpasses along its 10-kilometer stretch. These underpasses give access to many locations. However, officials noted that seawater often enters the underpasses during high tides.
In addition to the retaining walls, the BMC has installed stormwater drains near the Haji Ali underpass. These drains are designed to manage and redirect seawater to reduce flooding.
