The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it will build a new viewing deck as an extension over the Dadar seashore at Chaityabhoomi. The authorities said that this elevated platform will be built over a defunct stormwater drain or SWD in the region.

It is said that the elevated deck will be around 16 feet above the sea level. When completed, this 1,500 sq.m structure will allow visitors to get a better view of the sunset while the authorities will also construct ramps to make it wheelchair-accessible. The civic body has said that this project is estimated to cost around ₹3.61 crores with tenders being sent out for this project earlier this week.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the G-North ward, Kiran Dighavkar said - “The SWD outfall is redundant, and there are many visitors who climb on it to take selfies or photos of the Bandra-Worli sea link. We decided to strengthen the drain outfall area and construct this deck as a tourist attraction. All necessary coastal permissions have been sought for this project.”

He added that the height of the elevated structure was decided based on the height of the tides in the region over a 10 year period.

A senior civic official spoke about the implementation of other utilities in the region. “Electric lamp posts will be installed, which will be similar in style to the proposed railing on the deck. Since the deck will be over the SWD outfall, covering it completely, the drain will be protected from any further damage. All coastal norms are being followed,” the official said.

However, citizen activist, Nikhil Desai remains pessimistic about this project. “Authorities had also planned the Mumbai Eye, a giant Ferris-wheel on the lines of the London Eye, but nothing has been implemented so far. One can only say something about such projects after they have been implemented,” he said.
