Thirty dangerous public toilets in Bhandup will be demolished and reconstructed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the cost of INR 68 lakhs each. The proposal for the same will be tabled before the BMC's standing committee meeting on Tuesday, November 2.

According to the proposal, the civic administration is planning on demolishing these toilets since the cost of repairing them is 45% more than complete reconstruction.

A civic official said that there are dangerous toilets in the slum areas of the city, and citizens are still using them. If they aren't rebuilt or not repaired in time, it will cause a loss of life. He further said that the contractor, along with renovating the toilets, will have to clean the septic tanks that are full and give off a foul odour.

In 2018 after the community toilet collapsed in Bhandup, which claimed the life of two people, the BMC S Ward had conducted a structural audit of its 94 toilets across the ward. Nineteen restrooms are in the defect liability period and being maintained by a contractor. Nine toilets were termed extremely dangerous and were demolished immediately after the incident.
