Earlier this month, Asif Zakaria, Congress corporator from Bandra (West) had written to Maharashtra Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde to raise questions on various issues pertaining to the Carter Road promenade.

He also voiced to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that local residents living near the coastal locations of the proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link will impact the pedestrians. This is because one of the areas that are under construction would be near the sea-facing promenade near Carter Road's Otters Club.

Responding to the reply to his letter, Asif Zakaria said: “Unfortunately, we have no answers to the concerns of residents. Hence, a letter was written to MSRDC and the minister asking the queries. However, they haven’t revealed any specific details as their main focus is on the construction of the bridge. Once the project is completed, they would address these issues – traffic management and entry/exit points. They said that a contractor has already been appointed so, it would be difficult to change the planning done so far.

The citizens have raised questions over the continued uninterrupted accessibility and usage of the Carter Road Promenade and inturn affect senior citizens and children too. Moreover, no details have been given as to what is the level at which the entry/exit is proposed to meet at the Carter Road junction.

Apart from that, the construction work will also be held near the Railway Colony in the locality which will affect the promenade and the public there. Residents in this area also stated that the project could lead to heavy traffic near the club, and these concerns need to be addressed during the project work.

"In the proposed plan, a roundabout circle is also proposed near Railway Colony at Carter Road. It appears that a part of the existing promenade will also be consumed for the same. We have involved some urban developers to make other plans for the project to ensure the promenade is not being cut. Once the plan is ready, we can do a feasibility report along with MSRDC and then take it forward accordingly," he added.

Zakaria had also requested to arrange a site visit of the MSRDC officials to explain the plan and have a public hearing in the matter and also consider the suggestion of providing an underpass/overpass at Otters Club. He also believes strongly that no part of the promenade should be consumed in the proposed roundabout circle failing which Bandra will stand close to losing one of its most iconic open spaces.
