The Central Railways (CR) commissioned a state of the art, Electronic Interlocking (EI) system at Sewri railway station from December 26, 2021. This Electronic Interlocking can handle 26 track circuits and is built with fire alarm, fuse alarm and earthing detector system.

With development of modem fault tolerate and fault safety techniques, electronics and particularly microprocessors have found acceptance in the railway signaling. These systems occupy less space, consume less power, more reliable, easy to install and easy to maintain.

Electronic Interlocking is a microprocessor-based system which controls points, signals, level crossing gate etc. by centralized operation through control cum indication panel or Video Display Unit (VDU). This kind of Electronic Interlocking is also provided at Dockyard Road, Lonavala stations of Mumbai Division, Gaigaon, Badnera stations of Bhusaval division and Alandi station of Pune division this year.

Moreover, the CR has intensified the drive against persons not wearing face masks in trains and platforms in accordance with Government guidelines amid emerging concerns over Omicron Variant. On December 26, 190 persons were apprehended for not wearing masks at Central Railway stations and fines worth INR 35,150 were realised from them.
