Grant road bridge to be closed for six months; traffic will be diverted

The aging overbridge near Grant road which was built in 1921 is set to be closed for a period of six months as Western Railway commences regirdering works on its tracks. This road connects Lamington Road (DB Marg) to Nana Chowk. The traffic police authorities approved the closure and offered diversions for vehicles.

The closure of both arms of the road overbridge will impact vehicular movement on Patthe Bapurao Marg, Kennedy Bridge, and Warerkar Bridge. Western Railway has mentioned that this regirdering project will cost Rs 9.6 crore.

Heavy vehicles moving from Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and DB Marg (E) heading towards Nana Chowk Junction will be diverted to Kennedy bridge at Opera House Junction, or Diana bridge at Patthe Bapurao Marg, or Bellasis bridge at Mumbai Central.

On the other hand, heavy vehicular traffic from Nana Chowk Junction to Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and DB Marg (E) will be diverted to Kennedy bridge at Nana Chowk, or Diana bridge at Patthe Bapurao Marg, or Bellasis bridge at Tardeo Circle Junction.

With areas like Kennedy bridge already facing heavy traffic at peak hours, this closure for a period of six months will severely inconvenience the citizens travelling each day from the region. The closure will be in effect starting January 16, and given the estimates, the road overbridge should be open by June 16.
