Mumbai- The state government has announced that it will build 12 lakh affordable homes by 2022.

However, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) does not have new homes for its annual lottery this year.  In the last few years, MHADA has not come up with any new projects, nor has it completed its ongoing projects. The authority does not have land even if it decides to start new projects.

Till a few years ago, the MHADA used to release 3000-4000 affordable homes during its annual lottery but of late, it has been releasing 800 to 1200 homes. Last year, MHADA was willing to release affordable homes in the month of May but until April, they had no homes to announce the lottery. Although it managed to release less than 500 homes for its annual lottery, MHADA also released special homes declared under the chief minister's quota. Despite all the efforts, the homes were released only in August. This year too, MHADA appears to be suffering from the same problems.

According to sources, this year too MHADA does not have more than 600 homes for the lottery and MHADA officials have been given the target to search for new homes.
