The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) P North ward, in the past four months, has demolished over 1,500 illegal structures, reports stated. It was done in order to curb the increasing illegal structures in Mumbai.

The P North ward, in terms of the geographical area, is considered as the largest municipal ward. It covers the Malad, Gorai and Marve areas of the western suburbs.

Assistant municipal commissioner of P/N ward, Makarand Dagadkhai, said that out of the illegal structures demolished, the majority of them were commercial, while the rest of them were residential structures. All of these encroachments are taking place on lands that are owned by the state and Central government.

He further said that they are demolishing these structures now as the administration has been issuing notices to several land parcels belonging to the collector's department. They are in Marve, Erangal, Malvani and Madh. However, they did not receive any response to those notices following which they started demolishing the structures.

The civic body has also appointed a contractor to expedite the process, who is providing logistical support and manpower.

Meanwhile, additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani has said that the civic body has urged the state agencies to appoint consultants for conducting a risk assessment of illegal structures.
