Maharashtra State Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, reviewed the work of 24 National Highways in Marathwada Division and expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of work. Understanding the same, he gave clear instructions to the contractors asking them to complete the work at the earliest.

The review of the stalled work of National Highways was held under the chairmanship of Ashok Chavan. Present at the meeting with him were Public Works Secretary (Roads) Ulhas Debadwar, Secretary (Construction) Anil Gaikwad, Superintendent Engineer Prashant Auti, Deputy Secretary Rajendra Rahane, Chief Engineer K.T. Patil, Vinay Deshpande, Retired Chief Engineer, National Highways, Executive Engineer and Superintendent of Engineers, Aurangabad Division.

Reports state that the work is not being followed as per schedule. Highways projects have been planned from Paithan to Shirur, Shirur to Kharda, Kharwandi to Rajuri, Shiur to Vaijapur - Yeola, Aurangabad to Sillod, Chikhli to Dhad, Parli to Pimpala Dahiguda, Pangaon - Dharampuri - Parli - Injegaon in Aurangabad division, and the same is being managed by National Highways Department under the Public Works Department.

The review was held for  road projects from Kolha to Nasratpur, Nasratpur to Barasgaon, Sarasam to Kothari, Ardhapur to Himayatnagar, Himayatnagar to Fulsangvi, Usmannagar to Kundral, Ahmedpur-Pimpala Junction, Pimpala Junction to Manjarsumbha, Zahirabad to Nilanga-Latur, Mantha to Partur, Partur to Majalgaon, Cage to Kusalamb, Shirad Shahapur to Wasmat, Jintur to Parbhani and Ashtamod-Tiwatial (Latur to Udgir).

Expressing displeasure over the slow pace of work, Ashok Chavan directed the authorities to expedite the same.

Over the last few years, the practice of taking large contracts without adequate financial and technical capacity and getting the work done by other contractors has increased. On the other hand, the quality of work is deteriorating and the work has been stalled for years. Due to this, people in the state have to suffer.

Considering the same, Chavan warned that such incidents will no longer be tolerated and that the contractors who do not perform quality work as scheduled and as per the tender criteria will be blacklisted. Sharing more information about the land acquisition, he said that the forest department licenses and other issues should be resolved as soon as possible. A meeting will soon be planned to discuss the matters with the revenue department at the state level. Furthermore, strategic decisions should be taken to avoid such problems and mechanisms should be developed for demarcating the roadsides and registering them with the revenue department.

Adding more, Chavan said that engineers should be appointed and a report should be submitted to study the problems encountered while working on National or State Highways, and also to understand why citizens are opposed to road works.

Officials also reviewed the annual plan of Aurangabad Board of National Highways and information was given about the works to be undertaken in the annual plan for the year 2021-22.
