In recent developments, officials of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) speaking about the proposed car shed in Aarey Colony stated that the cost of the project can go up to ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 if shifted.

This comes after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday asked the Mumbai Metro and MMRDA officials to examine whether the proposed Metro car shed in Aarey Colony can be shifted to Kanjurmarg or Pahadi-Goregaon.

As per officials, 80 per cent of tunnelling and civil work for the first phase of the Metro had been completed. Earlier the tunnelling and the civic work were expected to be finished by March 2021, however, it would be useless without the car shed. The need for a new location, along with the delay in construction, could additionally pose a burden of ₹2,000 crores to ₹3,000 crores on the project.

Moreover, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is now facing a grim situation as the lack of labourers as well as the prolonged coronavirus lockdown has pushed the deadline farther.

Last year, there were massive protests regarding the felling of over 2,000 trees in the Aarey Colony for the construction of the car shed. The Aarey Colony is also known as the green lungs of the city due to the greenery. The 33.5-km underground Metro line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) passes through the Aarey Colony and its car shed was supposed to come up in this forested area.
