The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) announced the lottery for its 1384 flats on Sunday. While the winners for the Mumbai Board houses have been declared and they have been happy after being allotted the respective flats, more than 1.63 lakh applicants who failed to receive a flat have been disappointed. However, these applicants will now await the arrival of June-July as MHADA will declare another lottery within the next 6-7 months.

While talking to Mumbai Live, MHADA Mumbai Board official Deependra Singh Kushwah said that MHADA will announce the Mumbai Board lottery in June-July 2019. Alongside, he added that due to a rise in the demand for the flats in the past few years, this time, MHADA is planning to build 2000 flats by June-July 2019.

The lottery will consist of residential flats from MHADA Mumbai Board’s joint venture projects as well as the premium houses received from Maharashtra Repair Board. The houses will also include the unsold flats from the past which will be a part of the 2019 lottery.

The major reason why the announcement of the lottery has been kept during June-July instead of November-December is that of the Vidhan Sabha elections which are scheduled for next year during the same time.

As per the Election Commission’s Code of Conduct, a government organisation cannot sanction new projects 90 days prior to the election. Therefore, after facing trouble during 2014 elections, MHADA has decided to arrange the election early, in order to avoid any problems from the Election Commission. Thus, the lottery is scheduled to be announced for June-July 2019.
