The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation or the MMRC has said that it has appointed a contractor (Vascon Engineers) for the construction of the first residential tower along the Girgaum-Kalbadevi Metro 3 corridor. The MMRC is planning to build a total of three towers for the rehabilitation of residents whose properties will be removed for the construction of metro stations across the aforementioned Metro 3 corridor.

The contractor will soon begin construction on this 38-floor residential tower located in Kalbadevi. Each floor will have nine flats consisting of homes within 405 to 550 sq.ft. It is said that this building will be constructed in two phases.

Given the sheer scale of this proposed rehabilitation project for middle-class families with legal properties, the officials added that this is the biggest such project to be undertaken by the State Government.

Estimates mention that 423 homes, as well as 289 commercial blocks, were affected as part of the Metro 3 construction in the Girgaum-Kalbadevi stretch. However, it is said that rehabilitated residents of the Kalbadevi area will get flats with almost twice the living area as compared to their previous homes.

An official from the MMRC said “The work of this building will be completed in 54 months. The contractor will undertake work at a cost of Rs 131 crore.”

As for the Metro 3 line, it intends to connect areas like Girgaum and Kalbadevi, with the officials suggesting that stations at both locations will require approximately 1,200 sq.m of space. This line is intended to connect Colaba to Seepz via Bandra.
