The MMRDA has clarified that this cost variation will not impact the overall cost of the project which will be underway by May 2021 as per current estimates. Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA, RA Rajeev, said - “It is a huge project with several components like land acquisition, system works, civil construction. So we will save costs in one of these components, which will compensate for the variation. There is no escalation in the overall project cost.”

Hindustan Times accessed the minutes of the executive committee meeting which revealed that a cost variation of 32 per cent or ₹116.12 crores was approved.

This is mostly due to the extra work undertaken just prior to the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Elections. Further, the MMRDA has reportedly approved a cost variation for package 3 by ₹79.79 crores.

Rajeev also said that the MMRDA is currently expecting the first prototype of the metro trains to arrive in Mumbai by the end of December with trial runs to take place in January 2021. “Once the train arrives, we will have to undertake system integration works. We expect to start trial runs in January, which will go on for three months, post which, we will commence operations by the end of 2021,” he said.
