In a webinar held on Tuesday, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority chief, RA Rajeev said that Mumbaikars will have to wait for three more months than what was scheduled to hope on a ride on Metro 2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) and Metro -7 (Dahisar East -Andheri East) . The two metro rail lines were to be operational by December this year.

Rajeev stated that despite having the workforce of 11,000 labourers at various sites, the development authority could not commence any work for a month or two. He added that with the migrant worker gone, the MMRDA is now looking at another three-month delay.

"The Metros that were to start in December 2020, might start by March-April next year,” the MMRDA chief said.

Earlier, when the lockdown was announced in March, the MMRDA had talked about the delay in the two projects. However, this is for the first time that the MMRDA commissioner has announced revised dates for the two Metro projects. The chief has also stated that the delay has been projected on the basis of the current situation.

He said that if there is a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases again, they will have to revisit the timelines and finances accordingly. The 18.6-km Metro-2A project is estimated to cost ₹6,410 crore, while the 16.5-km Metro-7 project is expected to cost ₹6,208 crore. However, Rajeev said that these are the times of uncertainty and the authority might have to bear the unexpected costs for the delay as well.

He further added that the MMRDA has resumed work at many sites in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with the workers taking necessary precautions. They have been directed to wear masks at all times and adhere to social distancing while working. Every day, two meetings are conducted to guide them.
