The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has opened fresh bids for 10 monorail rakes consisting of four coaches. The authorities are reportedly considering Indian companies for the production of these rakes.

It is worth mentioning that the MMRDA has invited two bids prior to this but to no avail. The authorities have been seeking 10 monorail rakes for its 19.5 km corridor since early last year.

Officials have added that companies that manufacture metro rail rakes can also take part in the bidding process, thus including a wider bracket of manufacturers for the procurement of the monorail rakes.

Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA, RA Rajeev said - “We have widened the scope so that more Indian companies can participate in the process.” MMRDA is looking at acquiring 10 additional rakes for a 19.5 km corridor since early 2019.

The previous attempts to attract bidders were largely unsuccessful due to the fact that Chinese companies like CRRC Corporation Ltd and BYD Co Ltd posted bids for the MMRDA’s tenders. This came at a time when tensions between India and China were at their peak after border clashes between the two militaries in Eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley resulted in multiple casualties on both sides.

This was followed by a major outcry across the Indian political spectrum to boycott Chinese products, while some politicians even made ludicrous demands like asking for a ban on Chinese food in the country.

Even the Indian sporting world was impacted by the border tensions with the Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsor Vivo, a Chinese smartphone brand, amicably stepping down as the title sponsor after a mutual agreement with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

Dream11 has now been chosen as the title sponsor for the 2020 IPL season scheduled to be held entirely in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, fingers are still being pointed at the decision as Chinese juggernaut Tencent Holdings is an investor in Dream11.
