Mumbai's Western Express Highway (WEH) is one of the most popular roads used in the city. The series of flyovers which spread for over 25km was constructed in 2002 and since then, the WEH has proven to be beneficial for commuters on the western suburbs.

As per recent development, officials have approved the proposal of revamping the WEH, which includes aspects like construction of bus shelters, medians, and beautification of footpath and space below the flyovers. The revamp project will be undertaken in phases, where the pilot phase will be between the airport (near Shivaji Maharaj statue) to Kalanagar (Bandra East). Tenders for this phase of the project have been floated which will include maintenance of the stretch beautification along with planning and executing landscaping.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has also made plans to build connectors from Vile Parle thereby make this completely signal free. Further, the department would build a network of one-way roads, and making the stretch signal-free from Vile Parle to the Sahar Elevated Road.

Sharing more info, an MMRDA official told Mirror that the team will ensure detailed traffic markings are made on the roads thereby make it easy for motorists. Besides this the construction work will include medians, footpaths, boundary walls abutting service roads, etc.

The pilot phase of the project will be made at an approximate cost of ₹25 crore. out of which ₹13.63 crore will be used to make traffic signs. Besides this, the space will be utilised wisely for mini gardens and islands which will include chairs, benches, decorative statues and sculptures. 

Some parts of WEH which has the shanties, waste dumps, unused vehicles etc. will be removed to utilise the space.
