Mumbai has witnessed a trend of ROB closures and dismantling. Now, the historic Bellasis Road Over Bridge (ROB), which is 130-year-old, in South Mumbai has been marked for demolition. The bridge connects Tardeo, Byculla, Nagpada, Grant Road, and surrounding suburbs.

According to reports, the current ROB is deemed unsafe for use. The plan is to demolish the existing structure and replace it with a new one, with a subcontractor already selected for the job.

Western Railway (WR) is taking the lead in this ambitious project. According to reports, WR will prepare a comprehensive plan for the demolition by September 15. Furthermore, bids for this significant undertaking have already been initiated. WR intends to commence the demolition within the next two to three months.

However, it's not just about dismantling the bridge. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will have to remove the approach roads leading to the bridge too. Until this aspect is addressed, progress will be halted. It is also reported that a final plan may not be approved by BMC until November.

The Bellasis ROB stretches 56 metres in length and 28 metres in width. The estimated cost for its demolition is INR 36 crore, with approximately INR 24 crore dedicated to the civil and engineering work involved. The construction of the new bridge is projected to take anywhere from 18 to 24 months and comes with a price tag ranging from INR 60 to 70 crore.

The bridge sees 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles crossing it daily. It may significantly impact daily commuters from the area.

In its previous plan, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited intended to construct a cable-stayed ROB on Bellasis Road with a budget of INR 150 crore. But this plan was changed.
