In a significant development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to close the Gokhale bridge in Andheri for vehicular traffic for at least two years.

This move came after the consultancy firm, which is hired by the BMC to inspect bridges every six months, has deemed the bridge to be ‘dangerous and unsafe’ and suggested that it should be shut down for all traffic.

The civic officials and the traffic police will meet today, November 3, to discuss traffic management. For this, the civic body had written to the traffic police to draw up and suggest alternative routes for commuters.

It is pertinent to note that this bridge, a part of which collapsed in 2018, is a key connector between Andheri east and west, and is one of the busiest routes in that suburb.

Besides, it is to be noted that this development came after Ameet Satam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Andheri, in a letter to BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal demanded that the Gokhale Bridge in the constituency be closed immediately.

For those unversed, a portion of the bridge had collapsed in 2018, killing two people and injuring three others. Following this, it was revealed that the collapsed portion of the bridge came under the jurisdiction of the Western Railways (WR).
