In a welcoming news for Mumbaikars, the most awaited and iconic project Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is scheduled to open for the public on December 25, sources stated. However, an official announcement from the MMRDA is awaited for the same.

As per reports, the work of the longest sea bridge in India is said to be more than 97 per cent accomplished. The date also marks the 99th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Bajpayee.

It also came months after, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde embarked on a ride across the iconic bridge on an open-deck BEST bus on May 24.

According to latest report, 78 out of 130 CCTV poles have been installed. Moreover, MMRDA has finished more than half of the work on the toll infrastructure.

Soon after the reports were doing rounds on the commencement of operations, BJP leader took to X and shared: "There was a time when there was talk of building a railway overbridge and the bridge kept being built for years. These are the times when one does not know when the announcement was made and when the work started, the news comes directly about the inauguration."

The MTHL project, which is expected to cost INR 18,000 crore, spans 21.8 kilometers. Of the total length, it will span 16 km on water and 6 km on land.

The sea link's alignment begins at Sewri in South Mumbai and ends at Chirle in Raigad district. The distance between Sewri and Chirle right now is 52 kilometers.

One of the notable features of the bridge is the implementation of India's first Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. This system aims to streamline the toll collection process and facilitate smoother traffic flow.

Once operational, it is expected to accommodate approximately 70,000 vehicles on daily basis. The construction of the MTHL was divided into three packages, each catering to specific sections of the bridge.

Package 1, executed by L&T-IHI, spans 10.38 km and connects to the Eastern Motorway in Sewri. Package 2, implemented through a joint venture between Daewoo and TATA, covers a 7.807-km section and includes an interchange at Shivaji Nagar, facilitating connectivity to JNPT, Ulwe, and the airport sectors of Navi Mumbai. Package 3, undertaken by L&T, encompasses a 3.613-km stretch on the Chirle side and incorporates an interchange connecting State Route 54 and the NH4 Mumbai Pune Highway.
